Monmouth Takes First Steps To Education Center

The Monmouth Technology Initiative (MTI) has won approval to sponsor an AmeriCorps volunteer to spend a year full-time to set up and run a computer education center in Monmouth. The AmeriCorps volunteer, working through the Rural Technology Corps, will work to set up a technology education center designed to bring computer skills to underserved members of the community and will also work with community leaders in public-private initiatives to remove the digital divide in Monmouth. Besides providing an invaluable service to the community, the volunteer will gain teaching and community relations skills difficult to come by elsewhere. The MTI will provide office space, administrative support, supplies and Internet connectivity for the volunteer; through AmeriCorps, the volunteer will also receive health insurance, deferral of student loans and an Education Award for future tuition or loan repayment.
